They met every evening after he’d instructed Oliver. The boy was halting in his reading but would soon be able to figure out most printed things.

Clara was quick and eager, and it was a joy to work with her. They lingered after she finished reading, and talked. She told him of growing up with her part-native father and learning the skills he taught her.

“He wanted me to learn to hunt. Said it might mean my survival someday. I learned to snare rabbits. He insisted I shoot a deer and dress it out.” She shuddered. “I don’t like killing things even though I know it’s necessary for survival.” She brightened. “I planted a little garden at Stella’s place. I liked that.”

She told him of times they’d lived in a teepee. Other times, they’d lived in log cabins. She grew sad as if recalling the death of her parents.

He allowed himself to squeeze her hand and offer his comfort.

He talked about his family too. “Grandfather is a big man. As tall as me but arms like this.” He held his hands in a wide circle. I’ve seen him chop a cord of wood so fast I wondered if I’d dreamed it.” Smiling into her eyes, he told her of an almost-buried memory.

“Grandfather took me with him on a visit to a country church and let me stand beside him and read the scripture. I’ll never forget looking out at the people. A small church with probably twenty people. The light shone through the narrow, plain-glass windows. I remember whispering to Grandfather that there weren’t many people. Not like the church at home—a city church with over a hundred and fifty attending. He whispered back that each one was valuable in God’s eyes. It wasn’t numbers that mattered, rather a willing heart. I stood by him and read the Bible passage he had chosen. I looked up, saw the eager expression of a young man, and knew grandfather’s words were true. Willing hearts. Eager to hear from God.”

This evening he had a gift for her. He pulled it out as soon as they were settled.

“This is something my grandfather gave me.”
